grinding metal after moving a couple feet in reverse 200 1988

I have a manual 245 wagon with 136K.

Recently about once every ten times I put my Brick in reverse I move a couple of feet and then all of the sudden there is a super loud clunk/grinding metal noise from the rear wheels and the car stops moving. It happens both on flat ground and while backing up on an incline.

I then put the car in first gear and it drives off like nothing happened. Very perplexing.

Just by the sound of the clunk/grinding metal I feel like it might be doing some serious damage to a number of different components in the rear of the car.

Initial searches on the forum leads me to believe something loose within the rear bearings or brakes or possible the UV joint.

Not sure what the easier way is to test and isolate the problem, without doing some serious surgery to the rear of the car. Any thoughts?

Cheers
