760 Intermittent Overdrive

Daughter's 1988 760 (Freshman college student, hence big sturdy (crash-worthy) cheapish commuter car) has intermittent overdrive failure problems. The red arrow comes on and off with button push but OD often doesn't.

I suspect relay issues ( fixed by re soldering several times with the old 85 745T) but 1. my mechanic says that if the red arrow comes on, then the relay is fine (which i doubt), and 2. while I'm able to look at and grab the relay , I can't pull it out or see a release mechanism. Any ideas on question 2 (or 1 for that matter)?
