I had been having some issues with a loose AT shifter and had just finished ordering a new neutral safety switch and shifter linkage bushings. I also just ordered a new voltage regulator, as I had noticed my recently installed voltmeter going into the red on occasion. I also have a positive alternator cable that broke and I half-heartedly repaired the end. It has come loose on several occasions and has resulted in a flickering battery light or no-start and has to have the end repaired again.
So all this is going on, and I have been putting a lot of miles on the car. I take it for a drive and it sits for 5 hours. I start it up and it starts rough. Giving gas keeps it running fine, but after it drifts down to idle speed in traffic it starts sputtering and even stalls out and has to be restarted. As long as I give it gas, it is fine and I drive 10 miles home on the freeway. Once it is off, it won't start again, it has been days. For awhile it would turn over fine but never start. That gave way to really nasty sounding start attempts, and finally now the starter just whines a high-pitched whir and the engine doesn't seem to turn. I had ordered a new RPM/cranks sensor but now I am guessing the whine from the free spinning starter means the starter is toast.(?)
I have checked the main fuse, the AMM connector, checked and cleaned most main grounds in engine bay as well as all starter connections. Battery is 6 months old, starter is 10 yrs/63,000 miles old, Starter coil, RPM Sensor (white stripe), all fuel filters and fuel pump relay are 4 years/15,000 miles old.
