Fuel Pressure Regulator replacement (hard start) 200 1990

While trying to figure out my no-start issue last week I discovered I had the fuel in vacuum line issue.

To Volvo veterans that is a sure sign of a bad fuel pressure regulator. This is a 20 minutes job that almost anyone can do with just a couple hand tools and a shady tree.

A leaky fuel pressure regulator can cause a hard start(cranks for ever until it catches)because the fuel leaks from the rail into the throttle body. No pressure= not enough fuel for the injectors to spray.

That round thing on the fuel rail above the distributor is the fuel pressure regulator.

I didn't have enough cash to purchase a new regulator from any of the parts store near here ($58-$99), so I trotted off to pink-n-pull(AKA junkyard)alley. I grabbed 2 for $10. One off a 91 740 and another off an older 740.

When I brought them to the counter I asked the guy "In your opinion which one would be the better buy?" His reply;"The one that works...".

I decided I was going to to use the genuine Volvo part.

Grabbed the needed tools, a 10mm socket and ratchet, and a t-25 Torx bit and driver(for the clamp, older Volvos have standard Flathead or Phillips clamps).

First have a rag ready to catch the $1.35 worth of fuel that will pour out of the rail, I stuffed mine under the regulator(not in pics).Remove the two 10mm blots and the clamp closest to the regulator.

After you get the screws out and the hose off the regulator will just pull off for the fuel rail. it might take a good tug to get it off, but it's only held in by stubbornness and a "o" gasket. Be ready for another $.75 of fuel to pour out.

When you goto replace the regulator make sure the "o" gasket is in good shape, to get a good seal.

Also make sure the vacuum line is not torn up.

And That's it. Installation is the same, only in reverse. Took longer to write up the how-to than the actual replacement did.

I was lucky the regulator replacement was good, but new or used the procedure is the same.
