My 1988 244DL has been running rough lately, so I wanted to change the fuel filter today. To relieve the fuel pressure, the manuals say to remove the fuel pump fuse and run the car until it stalls out. I removed the number six fuse and ran the engine for over 5 minutes and it never stalled out. I tried removing the number 4 as well (in tank fuel pump fuse) and it still never stalled out. Is there something I'm missing here? How is it still getting fuel when neither fuel pump is getting power? Is it safe to take out the filter with the system still under pressure? I don't want to mess anything up here.
