Hi all:
After years of owning and playing around with 240s, I recently bought my first Amazon, a 1967 122s coupe with B18B engine. Really thrilled to have it and to learn new/old things about it!
Anyway, it had been sitting in the original owner's garage for 8 years, so it took me a while to get the fuel system "de-gumized" and the gas tank refilled with fresh gas. I also partially deassembled the SU HS6 carbs by making sure the fuel bowls, floats and throttle linkage were clean and not sticking. Also made sure that the jets were moving freely with the choke pulls.
I was able to get the engine running. It was a little rough but that was expected. It did rev up nicely though when I turned up the gas But when driving and I hit the gas, it showed strong acceleration for like a second then suddenly bog down and go for like just 15 mph, even when I floored the gas. It was only responsive for a second every time I release and hit the pedal again. If I do that with quick repeats, the speed picks up. I thought the carbs might have been set too lean, but I had already turned the jets way open. I have also tested for possible vaccuum leaks around the carbs, but nothing really showed.
I know that rebuilding the carbs may be in order, but do you have any advice on what may cause this kind of symptom? Thanks!
