So, my 740TI has a bad head gasket, I'm looking for a car to get me around so I can make money to fix it.
I came across a 1984 240DL that cranks but doesn't start, block-driven distributor, and no fuel pump noise. It's a manual (m47? 4+OD). He says the OD solenoid is bad, but the clutch is fine and he has a replacement 240 wagon.
He also says he's replaced the wiring harness - and I can see where it's been replaced under the hood. Does it fail elsewhere?
The interior is in great shape (with one of the vinyl headliners), it has 228K miles on it, sounded like it cranked over strongly, and he said his dad had gotten it to fire by spraying carb cleaner in the intake.
So, how bad is the fuel pump change? It's way back near the tank, in a cage. I've replaced the one in my car, and the worst part was getting a grip on the nuts and such. Would one from a 90 740 Turbo fit the 84 240DL?
And how bad is it to get the OD solenoid fixed?
I'd be doing everything myself.
The guy seems legitimate and honest, it's parked on the street where he works because that's where it stopped running.
I'm going to go dig around in the FAQ right now, and eat dinner, hoping to work all day tomorrow for a temp place.
Happy Bricking (and may your lower rad hose not pop off twice in one day...)

1990 740 Turbo, on its way to stock specs, maybe beyond
EDIT: He's also replaced the fuel pump relay and checked the fuse. But I'll do all that before I buy the pump/car.
