Blower Motor question .. just to eliminate the obvious 200

As I understand it all the blower motor does is push air over the heater core or a/c evaporator (if that's the term) ... why not just get a 12vdc fan, put a switch in line and wire tie it under the dash? Probably room enough for a 4inch that throws a lot of air ... aim it up and might have defrost in the winter. I know ... too simple ... but any reason not to do this?
