tailgate won't latch 900 1994

I used to "unsqueeze" the the tailgate release handle... push it back to a pre squeezed position to get my tailgate to latch..
that no longer works
have shot WD-40 all over the place..
any suggestions appreciated!
BTW just had a fuelpump disaster... $165 tow and main fuel pump replacement..
about 288,000 miles on the car..
