940T Front Strut Question - Experience 900

I recently undertook a summmer maintenance weekend on my '93 945T. Some thoughts and a question.

I replaced the front struts - undertaking the driver's side first and then due to time and patience paid to have the passenger side completed in the shop. I replaced the insert, strut mount + bearing, cone bushings, and tie-rod end. I know that I installed the strut mount in the proper orientation.

Q. The strut assembly that I worked on has a quiet 'bong' noise at multiple intervals as I turn the steering wheel. I assumed that I had done something incorrectly. My Volvo mechanic said that he believes the coil spring is moving slightly and that the movement is due to a weak coil spring that is no longer properly seating due to diminshed spring force. Is this a bogus explanation?

My gut tells me that the mount bearing isn't quite right. I know that it is installed in the correct orientation, but I just feel like something's amiss.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

P.S. As others have indicated the combo dust boot / bump stop assemblies sold by FCP are poorly sized to fit our cars. I cut the top 3/8" off to allow it to fit over the strut shaft correctly - not an ideal solution.
