240 fuel delivery issues 200

greetings all,

forgive the question if it is a common one, and if i had more time i could find the answer, but time is of the essence...

so my '88 240 dl wagon wouldn't start the other morning. it seems like it's not getting fuel, so i secured a new fuel pump and relay.

turning the key on, i can't hear the main fuel pump spinning, but by taking it out and hooking it directly to the battery, it spins. so i installed the new fuel pump relay, put the old fuel pump back in and tried to start to no avail. then had the idea of running power directly from battery to main fuel pump at main fuel pump location. this got it working, but no fuel comes out.

at this point, don't know whether to investigate in-tank fuel pump or continue in direction of finding why it doesn't seem to work when not connected to battery.

any ideas?
