I have 2 concerns about my recently purchased used '87 240 sedan.
1) I have exhaust smelling smoke, not heavy buy consistently rising, coming up from driver's side of engine (opened hood and saw it today for first time). I first noticed these fumes (from vents) during slow driving. They are more apparent when I am stopped at a light.
2) I hear 2 abnormal noises when my car accelerates. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with my1st concern. 2a) Always pinging. It's not the kind of pinging that is fuel related but is a type of pinging nonetheless. 2b) When I accelerate faster there is another sound that is like a metal rattle (like a metal part is not tightened down enough).
Just a little history: I bought the car a month ago. My main concern about the car before I bought it was that the engine would shake a lot / car's idle was rough. But I couldn't go wrong for $550, right? My mechanic smoothed it out a bit by replacing the intake manifold gaskets. I'm not sure if the intake has anything to do with these issues. Exhaust manifold appears to be smoke free...
Any ideas?
