No Ground to Horn Buttons 700 1991

Horns have failed in my 91 740. I have traced the problem to intermittent / poor ground provided to the horn buttons. It looks as if there is a coil spring surrounding the column that is supposed to provide ground to the buttons. Does anyone have experience replacing this? The little spring loaded contact and the ring it connects to are fine. It is definitely a lack of ground to the buttons. Thanks for your help.
