940 wagon with mitsubishi turbo, stall when slowing down. 900 1994

This happens between 10-15mph and will restart without any hesitation. There is also a mild tapping or clicking that will last 15- 45 second when the stalling occurs. It won't make any noise while revving the motor out of gear, but as soon as I engage the transmission the tapping will reoccur when decelerating.
One coincidence that may be significant,I changed the oil and installed a man filter shortly before all this occurred.
I bought the car a couple of months with 114,000 miles. The only aberrations I've noticed since then is there's a momentary drop in the idle that my girl friend discribes as a hiccup. The turbo normally has a mild and constant whirring sound even at idle, which will momentarily disappears shortly after the hiccup.
The company I bought the car did check out the turbo. Everything looks brand new and rust free under the hood including the hoses going to the turbo. I thought about changing the crank positioning sensor., but from what I've read that would merely be a shot in the dark... Am I wrong?
