trunk latch conundrum 120-130

i've got a trunk latch problem. the latch mechanism that hangs down from the trunk lid has started drooping forward, so rather than sliding into the other half of the mechanism, it bounces off it. i've peered at the mechanism from all angles, but can't figure out what's going on in there. has anyone encountered this problem? has a spring lost its spring or something?
