Manual transmission Gear Ratios. What gives with 1st gear being 4.x:1??

Hello brickster folks.

I've been driving an 84 244 with an M46 while I fix my 90 740T with an AW70 (PO frankencar).
The 1st gear is terribly short in the M46. Are they all this short? I had played with ideas of converting my 740 to am M46, but the super short 1st gear (and overdrive instead of 5th gear) has turned me off the idea. I do realize the differential gears play an important role in how short the gears feel, but really? Was Volvo expecting us to haul yachts uphill in our volvos? Who needs a 4.3:1 1st gear? I think my AW's is a 3.3:1 or 2.7:1, which seems much more appropriate. It is very hard to stall the car in 1st, so I guess that's an advantage. And it would be really easy to break the tires loose with a turbo car :P
