I started mirroring the gallery/brickpix feature tonight. The site could actually be slower while the upload occurs (6000 images to go) but when this is done it will push all of the image traffic off to Amazon's CloudFront services. This will take the load off the local connection. Since there's 20,000-30,000 image downloads each day, this could make a difference.
For those who missed the note about it, I quadrupled the memory on the server last night. Monitoring the server, it's easy to see that this has been effective. Some users have told me they see a difference as well.
I hope the experience of the site gets back to what should be expected. I plan to do several more changes over the next couple of weeks while I'm on vacation from my primary employer.
