Re jwalker's comments below (copied from another thread).
How do I tell if the strut is bad? The rubber visible from the top mount under the hood has bad age cracks. I don't know if this is a weight-bearing structural piece or a damper.
The struts don't clunk when I bounce the car or on bumps. Handling seems OK.
I replaced the ball joint but I think I'm just going to replace the strut assemblies because of the rubber cup. As all other joints & bushings are tight, I have to infer that the struts are bad and somehow twisting on tight turns to cause the scrubbing.

"The inside of the pass-side tire (where the loose ball joint is) is badly worn on the inside."
Could be that ball joint and/or a bad alignment caused by it.
OTOH, if the spring seat on that side is in bad enough shape that the strut is shifting around that would certainly explain the tire wear. You could pull that strut or maybe both and replace anything in there that is shot. Might be a good idea if the car has high mileage and is running on its original struts.
