Replacing rear brakes, cannot get calipers piston to compress 200 1980

I'm replacing the rear brakes, all was fine until the pads. ATE system, with all new ATE parts, pads will not fit into caliper, let alone straddle the rotor. I let out the bleed screw a bit, I have the Haynes manual, tried to follow, I'm missing a step somewhere. Any suggestions?
