So, I was playing around with my non-functioning M46 overdrive the other day while on the freeway with a cold engine.
The OD engaged, stayed engaged, and in essence WORKED with a cold engine.
Yes, I still need to replace the seals, but I can't get to it until a few months from now. Is there an additive I can add, or fluid I can replace my current ATF with to safely increase the viscosity?
The manual lists both 10w-30 and 20w-50 as being a suitable lube for the M46.
Would a higher-viscosity fluid probably work just fine?
EDIT: According to a few things I just stumbled upon, it's equivalent to something like SAE5 (That's not a typo) at 212F.
2nd EDIT: Or maybe it's 5w-20. Either way, it's much less viscous than 20w-50. Anyone have good or bad luck running 20w-50 in an M46 gearbox? I think I've asked before. The trans already needs 1st gear synchros and 2nd is not far behind.
