The OEM Bosch voltage regulators common on late 70s & early 80s Volvos (Bosch 1 197 311 028 for 28mm slip ring and 1 197 311 090 for 32mm slip ring) were 14.0V devices for the 55-65amp alternators. These output volts in the low thirteens (13.2, 13.3) under full load on a hot day which is getting near the threshold of not fully charging the battery.

Many aftermarket regulators (including those sold by fcpgroton) are 14.6V devices. An auto electrician even suggested a modification to raise the output of the above Bosch regulators by 0.5V "for old Volvos". (The mod is here for the curious http://www.detomaso.nu/~thomast/alternator/)

It is safe to go to an aftermarket to get that extra 0.6V to ensure battery is always fully charged? I don't want to shorten the life of my new battery by overcharging or undercharging. Previously my batteries lasted between 3 to 4 years.
