I'm posting this separately as it's not about wheel-bearings. I'm commenting on the general case below. Not Rludwick's auto-tech knowledge re "I got my information over 30 years ago ...".
I find often - in myself and others - that the info does change and we don't keep up. This varies w/ mindset but seems closely tied to the amount of formal education we've had in something.
- Doctors are often the worst - heavily trained in a field that changes rapidly.
- A dietitian friend - despite much continuing education - seems to lag current thinking by several years.
- Contractors - despite revised building codes and seminars - often do what was correct when they were learning.
- And I find it in myself: things I learned even 20 years ago are wrong now. I recently learned of a new method of building flat roofs that is not being done here at all.
For myself, I'm increasingly wary of relying on what I learned even 10 years ago - even when I can go to a reference source.
And as a cynic I can't help mentioning that much of the information we see is filtered and massaged eg. those selling grease offer methodologies different from those offering greaseless solutions. NBC (National Blueberry Council) would love the FDA recommending 1-gallon/ day.

"Well This is a very disturbing change in attitude on Timkins part. I got my information over 30 years ago originally from Texts provided by Timkin during training and I recently checked on their website as soon as couple of years ago the last time someone questioned me on it to see if they had changed their tune to that procedure and at that time it was still holding true to the letter, but it appears in the last few years that they have changed their mind. ....
It's a bit disconcerting to think they have changed their minds across the board on that one. It usually takes a long time on cars, but on semi truck wheel bearings you can put a temp gauge on a wheel that has been properly torqued and one that has been set loose like that and the loose one will get hotter than a firecracker very quickly,....
