Alternator ?? 700 1991

1991 740 auto sedan with about 160k miles. Starting about three weeks ago sometimes while trying to start car it cranks over and then stops after a second or two. So I try again & again with same result. Then it starts up on 4th or 5th try. After posting thinking my starter was bad it was suggested to have my electric checked out. So I went to Advance Auto and had my electric checked. Odd results : With car turned off battery voltage was 13.18 volts and amperage was 885 amps . With car running battery voltage was 14.03 volts and amperage was 1261 amps . Battery is a 12 volt 600amp battery. Why such somewhat high voltage readings and why such very very high amperage readings ?? Advance Auto suggested replacing alternator. Before doing that I figured I would run this matter by Brickboard to see if it I should indeed replace alternator or if problem is elswhere. Alternator & battery look good but as I just bought this car a year ago I do not know how old they actually are. Thanks very much for any and all help.
