what should the alt.output be ? 200 1992

Wife called today in a panic. Her wagon died on the road and would not start. The battery had about 12.25 volts and I ohmed out all the fuses, went to jump it and the battery ground was loose ( my fault ) tightened it up and jumped it off. no problem. got it home to check it and i was still only getting 12.75 at idle.
Should i have the regulator replaced or just a new battery ? what should the output of the alt. be at idle? I dont want to horse around too long, she is driving my truck until her car is fixed.
