Rough engine, growly noise from under hood. 900 1997

Our 960/S90 is running a little rough at low rpm's and has a sort of growly sound from under the hood. It doesn't sound like a bearing noise to me. It drives fine out on the road. We mainly notice the vibration/roughness when starting it up or idling. The growly noise is heard all the time, except at highway speeds. It's just not as quiet and smooth as this 6 cylinder engine should be. I'm hoping someone has some ideas about what to check.
