My trunk mat has turned to a tar-like goo... why? 120-130 1966

I'm cleaning out the car in preparation of my next cross country drive this up coming week, and when I got into the trunk, I noticed the trunk mat has turned into a gooey tar like substance in a lot of places.

How did this happen?

Are replacement mats available? (Is there a part number, and where are they available?)

And finally, how do I keep this from happening again?
