air conditioning

Hi All,

the AC for my 740 GL '90 stopped working. I hope to get that going again but certainly with your help.
Looking at flushing the lines, changing the receiver/drier, orifice tube, evacuating with vacuum pump and recharging. Please let me know if I got the sequence wrong..
There is a filter looking thing on one of the lines after the receiver/drier and before the compressor. If looks like a cylinder 2-2.5in diameter and 3-4in long.
Any one know what this is? It is all covered with gunk and any serial number would not be recoverable.
And one more question. The AC pulley is not aligned with the crankshaft pulley.
It is kind of like this

| crankshaft

\ ac pulley

but not that much..
Do you know what might be wrong?
