Drive-belt adjustment sequence? Squeal 200

Replaced 4 belts (AC, PS, 2 fan-alt) on a 92 240 yesterday and noticed as I adjusted the PS & AC that tightening seemed recursive: the PS affects the AC and vice-versa.

In the end it seemed best to snug up the AC but leave a little slack; then tighten the PS. I don't use the AC so don't really care if it's on the loose side.

Nothing on this in Haynes or Bentley; or in the archives here.

Note that the car had a 15-second post-startup squeal for >1 year and replacing the belts a year ago didn't fix that that (the crankshaft pulley was fine). The squeal is now gone. I wonder if one the PS or AC belt was loose. Or if the alternator belts were mismatched eg. different mfg lots.
