Overheating question / fan clutch 200 1990

Our 1990 240 wagon stalled unexpectedly on a hot day recently. This was after a fair amount of stop and go traffic. I opened the hood to let it cool down and checked to see if the fan spun freely, which it did. I started it again to get it out of the way and let it cool down some more. When I went to move it, it seemed to not be firing on all cylinders. After cooling, it ran like normal and I was able to get it home. I plan on replacing the fan clutch soon, but was wondering if anyone knows what caused the stalling? (I'm curious more than anything) Was the stalling related to a sensor reading protecting the engine by shutting it down perhaps, or was it more likely that something failed temporarily due to the heat? I enjoy understanding and working on this vehicle in large part due to the wisdom found on this board. Thanks for any knowledge shared.
