Question on 940 Front caliper hose "adapter' 900 1993

QUESTION: What is the purpose of "Adapter" pictured below? At first I thought might adapt the flex hose to a replacement caliper without kinking or "pig-tailing". But if true, I don't see how that's accomplished—since it's the same thread size (10x1.0mm) on both ends — the hose end fitting will thread directly into the caliper or into the adapter, and can kink in either case, if it's still tight at the junction to the hard line upstream (where my real problem lies).

Adapter, Brake Hose 1329693

BACKGOUND: I'm just doing my second ever 940 Girling front caliper replacement. On the first one 8 years ago I was unable to loosen the hose at the hard line junction. Defeated there, I cut the hard line just ahead of the junction so I could move the hose and "frozen" fitting to the vise. I was then able to carefully split the hard line's brass coupling nut to find that it had been assembled with Red threadlock!

But the hose was still useable, so I connected it to the caliper adapter first. Then, with the hose kink-free, I fitted a short hard line replacement (with a good brass nut and NO THREADLOCK) at the junction end. Finally, the short replacement hard line was connected to the original cut line with a 3/16" compression union. [Full Disclosure: I have used compression unions on these copper alloy brake lines for many years, always on family or friend's cars, with never a problem.] This final connection is shown below, still in place and leak-free.

My apologies for the hugeness. No comments on Northeast rust please.
