I have been parting out my 940 Turbo for almost a year now, and am down to, "it must get out of here soon" so I have taken a few parts off, the latest idea , getting the steering rack, as the one on my 744 is very stiff and obviously needs replacing. The 940 rack had been operating fine, so I figured I might as well take it, save myself $200+ anyway.
Well, of course the bolts through it to the subframe were quite rusted, but I managed to get them to turn. While they were soaking in PB blaster, I tried to loosen the locknuts on the tie rods. No amount of force would budge them, so I got out the torch, which promptly flamed out, off to HD to get a new one, heated up the nuts and Finally they broke loose.
I have no idea why mechnics make them so tight, it is unnecessary.
Then back to the bolts in the subframe, hhmm what's that. Damn the rack mount has a crack in it! Some bozo tightened the nuts too much when putting in a new one and cracked the rack.
OK forget the rack.
Take off the AC compressor, the fuel rail, temp sensors....
So, if you want anything off a 940, let me know. Lots of stuff is gone, no ECU's nor LH doors or tailgate, no mirrors. Fine Rh doors and interior (black leather). Radiator is spoken for. Engine is in fine shape, as is the turbo.
Just writing this to make you feel better. Many times I have been depressed about the state of my cars and their age, bbut then I read about someone with an 80's 240 they are keeping running, and I realize i am not alone (and others have at least the same woes as I) and I am back under the car........
