Hi Brickboarders. I have been posting to this board and getting help with my 1992 Volvo 745T with 308K for the last 14 years. You have all helped me keep this car running. I am at a crossroads. The structural member underneath the car, infront of the rear axle where some of the axle supports bolt into has gone soft and has a large hole in it from rust. This support is just about underneath the rear seat and is part of the unibody, so it is not something that can be unbolted and replaced. I was refered to a mechanic who says he can fix it. He would have to remove (cut out) the cross member, fabricate a new one, and weld it into place. Then he would reattach the rear axle supports and undercoat the entire piece. He is asking $800.00 for this job. I really like this car and the engine and drive train are still in perfect working order. There is some other rust spots starting, but I think that can be stopped with some POR 15.
Oppinions please- Shoule I attempt this repair, or just put the car to rest? Anyone else done anything similar to this procedure? If so, any advice, things to look or ask for? Thanks in advance for the advice.
