Mystery part 900

So, I have seen this on the firewall of the 945T, and recently junked the car. So I took it off, pried it apart, and found this:
Volvoparts 003

No wires to it, just a plastic box with about a 5 lb piece of metal enclosed in silicon.
What is it's function??
