m41 transmission am I missing something? 1800

Hello all, I have a 68 with the stock m41 4 speed/overdrive transmission and it is filthy. There is old fluid and gunk completely covering it. I noticed it goes all the way to the shifter so I took the carpet and rubber shift boot out. There is a pool of oil filling the area where the shifter handle comes out and must be splashing/dripping down the sides from there.
Is there supposed to be a cover there to keep the liquid in? If anyone knows what I am missing or even has a picture of that area could you let me know?

BTW, how does the oil get all the way up the shaft to the shifter?
