m41 transmission am I missing something? 1800

What Eric said, and having the boot fit snugly around the transmission helps keep the area clean. Mine sort of drapes down the sides of the trans.
Just ahead of the shifter is a large cover where the shifter rod enters the tranny. If that gasket is leaking it can get messy, too, which I learned from experience.
