Cutting ski pass through 200 1990

One thing I really don't like about my '90 wagon is the fact that it does not have split foldable rear seats. I'd like to take some friends up the mountains with our gear but it is either no skis/snowboards or only me and one other person plus lots of gear.

Don't really have the money to buy a roof rack so I started to look around for alternatives. On the w/e I looked into a sedan on a junkyard and checked out the ski pass through it had. It would definitely be to small for a snowboard but the idea now would be to temporarily remove the arm rest from the back seat, cut most of the metal behind it out and create a big hole. Would leave the holes for the armrest mounting in place. All that would allow me to pass gear through and still be able to move 4 people around.

Question is, how much would I damage the stiffness of the back seats? Don't want them to split in half in case I get into an accident. Maybe I need to weld something on to strengthen them?

Anyone have a clue or has done that?

Cheers
Stefan
