Tried to wire up a trailer and the brake light circuit of the bulb failure sensor died. Has this happened to anyone else?

The brake circuit on the bulb failure sensor is already pretty delicate and failure prone (an accurate description of irony), though I'm wondering if trailer wiring can put it over the edge, and how I can wire it up to avoid frying a fairly expensive part?
