I'm going to try to keep this brief. It's a sad story.
My 26 year old daughter's 940 blew out the radiator plug on her 2 yr old replacement radiator, overheated and died. IF I HAD SAFETY WIRED IT, THE CAR WOULD STILL BE ALIVE AND WELL. I knew better. My other daughter's 940 did the same thing and I followed Spook's excellent advice and fixed it BEFORE there was a problem. Lucy lives out of town and I simply overlooked this simple procedure when she was home and asked me to check out her car.
So....I've got a pristine, loved and pampered '95 940 wagon (red w/tan leather)with a warped head and God knows what internal damage. She was on the expressway when it happen and pulled off, but the car stopped running before she could shut it down. I'm considering selling it "as is" and moving on. Thought about bringing it back home and replacing the head, but I'm having 2nd thoughts about damage to the pistons/rings/etc. An independent Volvo tech in SC suggested replacing the engine IF I planned on keeping the car. He said the odds of internal damage were pretty high and replacing the head might just be a waste of money.
The crankcase was full of Mobil 1 synthetic so maybe there's hope...
Please give me some guidance/insight. After 10 years, this car's part of the family.
SAFETY WIRE YOUR RADIATOR PLUGS!!
