Trip odometer reset 120-130 1967

After tanking up yesterday, the trip odometer decided to no longer reset. The tenths went around to zero and that is all she wrote. I was turning the cable with a pair of needle nose vice grips, the knob has been lost a long time.

Do I have to remove the instrument panel to find out what is wrong? If that is the case, do I also have to pull the steering wheel and the turnsignal cover? I have not had the instrument cluster out yet and can just imagine the dust and dirt inside.

Now that it is nice outside, I don't relish having the car 'down' for any length of time.
