On 700 and 800 series North American Volvos, I'd been noticing in the last six-seven years deployed airbags, usually the driver and passenger side air bags.
Not the side (SIPS) airbags in the 800s if so equipped. Unless the 800 series has impact damage do the SIPS bags deploy.
The notion sort of coalesced today, at the Spokane Valley Pull and Save (http://www.pullandsave.com/yardlist.htm). Three of the four 850s in the yard today had deployed airbags and no impact damage. Both of the 700 series (not the 780 in the yard now) have deployed airbags, yet no impact damage.
I know some junkyard don't want to pulling airbags. Doubtful the junkyard policy is to energize the airbags so they do deploy as many windshields would be damaged and unsaleable.
Also, from this and other junkyards, I've pulled what are now spare airbags from a 92 or 93 240 as backups for the 240s I have.
Do airbags deploy of their own accord without the impact sensors being so jarred as to close the contacts so the SRS deploys the airbags?
Is this matter a concerning one for owlder Volvo owners like all of us?
Yes, I'm aware of the TSB for 240s to take them to the Volvo dealership service center so they can "inspect" the airbag system.
Ideas? Suggestions? Comments? Concerns? Please.
