Electrical gremlins - battery? 200 1984

Hi again,

Well, a problem appeared tonight all of a sudden with my 1984 240. As I was slowing down at a stop light, suddenly some lights came on in the dash, lambdasond, bulb failure etc...and the volt gauge started dipping, getting close to 10. As I started again and accelerated, the lights slowly disappeared, and the needle of the volt gauge went back to the middle, somewhere around 13. And it did it at every stop, and even now in front of the house. The car did not cut out but I thought it was going to run out of electricity.

Interestingly, tonight I turned on the headlights for the first time since I got the car last week. That said, turning them off did not fix the issue.

Now as the car is off, the volt gauge shows about 12.

Is this a sign of a battery failure, or something else? I have no idea when this battery was last replaced, perhaps years ago. The contacts are clean, no corrosion. I did replace the battery sometime in 2006 but I do not recall if it's the same one.

When I've had battery issues before, they were just dead. I never experienced this.

Everything was fine this morning and at lunch time.

Any ideas?

Thanks!
