intermittant charging failure 240 200

'93 240 two nights in a row, the charging system stops working after a few miles. I have an LED gizmo in the cig lighter that let me know that charging had stopped, and later verified with a meter.\

The dash charge/batt light did NOT come on at any time (tho it did come on when i first started the car up). When i pulled over, shut down, then restarted the car, the charging resumes correctly.

any ideas whats going on here ?
