Broken black wire at engine, from alternator 200 1992

Just noticed that the thin black wire coming from alternator is broken, sort of aiming into space. There is a rubber tube on engine block (?) that it seems to go into. When I touched the tip of the rubber, it crumbled off. Other posts seem to say that this thin black wire is related to oil pressure? Is it okay to drive this way? Other than the car typically running bumpity when it is wet outside (spark plugs, etc. checked by mechanic), I THINK things are okay. (Although, for only the second time in my life, with my gas gauge not working, I ran out of gas yesterday - coasted off of highway and pumped gas pedal like crazy to get to the near by gas station. Check engine light was on after pumping 15.25 gals of gas in ($60!!!!), and had to really pump the gas pedal to get the car going after the fill-up. Thanks to an older Art Bernstein post, took out fuse number 6 and check engine light, indeed, went out! Hope it stays out! :-) Planning a 200-plus mile drive into Vermont this week and looking forward to BB thoughts on this broken black wire. <3 (1992 VOLVO 240 Wagon, 144,000)
