rear taillight bulbs - 3 on passenger side- 4 on driver side - whaaat??? 900 1996

orange "change bulb" light on dash. rear passenger side - top (red lens) not bright like driver side. looked inside pass side bulb assembly and find 3 bulbs (no bulb on top) - driver side has 4 bulbs. I'm confused - what bulb should I change out?

this is a forest green 96 960 - 175000 miles and still a beauty.
