Can I pull the transmission snug to the engine with the bolts? 200 1991

I'm installing an M47. After wrestling with it I finally got it lined up. It didn't slide all the way on easily, there's about a ½inch gap between the bellhousing and the block. The input shaft definitely lined up with the clutch splines, but I'm not certain about the pilot bearing. I did have it all lined up with an alignment tool that would go in and out smoothly. I can tighten the bolts relatively easily, and the alignment dowels look to be lined up.

It didn't slide all the way together completely effortlessly, but should it have? There wasn't much resistance when I tightened the bolts, I'm just trying to be extra careful. By snugging it up with the bolts will I break something, or can I be confident that since it's this close everything is correctly lined up? Here are some pics, in case seeing things helps:
