1986 240 Wagon, ATE Calipers rear

I replaced the rear brake pads and rotors.

I pressed the caliper piston in all the way to fit the new pads in. Could this have harmed the calipers?

I bled the rear left caliper. Fluid went through for about 50 strokes, now... nothing.

The master cylinder reservoir is full of new fluid, as it was through the whole bleeding process.

Weird thing is, when I depress the brake pedal, it give a symptom of a bad master cylinder.

With quick, hard pressure, the pedal will give resistance to about 1/2 way down, then much less pressure to the end of the stroke.

With lighter, steady pressure, the brake pedal will slowly sink to the end of it's travel.

The master cylinder did not seem bad before I started the brake pad replacement.

I can see no fluid leaking from the rear calipers.

Questions: Is it likely I damaged the calipers by pressing in the pistons?

Can a bad caliper cause symptoms similar to a bad master cylinder?
