I am having an intermittent no start issue! I've got a 1988 740 turbo wagon 111,600 miles on her. For the last month or so I've been having an intermittent no start problem. I took her into my mechanic and he couldn't replicate the problem. I've changed out the fuel pump relay and the power stage. The mechanic showed me how to check if it was the fuel pump or a spark issue. This morning I think I discovered it is a spark problem. I pulled the coil wire off of the distributor to check for spark while it was being cranked over took the wire over to a bolt in the engine compartment--nothing. I called my mechanic told them what I found and he said the problem needs to replicated for an accurate diagnosis. Of course my car started right up!
I've checked this site's FAQ and search. I'm not very mechanical but I'm not an idiot either.
What should I try? The car cranks over strongly. It doesn't seem to matter how long the car has been parked for me to have a problem. Sometimes I'm parked for a few minutes sometimes I'm parked for a couple of hours. If it is indeed a spark problem what should I check next? Coil? Is there something between the ignition switch and the coil that could be an issue?
Any help would be appreciated.
