Rear end swap M46/Aw71 700 1987

A few years ago, I swapped in a M46 for the AW71 on my '87 745T. After returning from a 1000 mile trip recently, I wasn't real thrilled with the mileage, I got about 22. As I understand it, the rear end ratio is taller on the manual transmission cars. I still have the donor car (91 740T). What's involved in swapping these? Will the gears from the later car bolt right in to my differential or are the axles different?

Thanks!
