Seat skin cleaning...washer or dry cleaning?

Everyone,

I have an 1985 740 Turbo I am cleaning up and I am currently stripping the cloth seats for cleaning and general repair. I was thinking of just washing the seat skins in the washing machine once or twice to get them thoroughly clean, but a friend suggested dry cleaning as possibly being a bit gentler on the old cloth. Has anyone tried this? Any benefit over just using the washing machine?

Also, some of the seats have cloth and leather stitched together...any special precautions to take there?
