1993 240 speedometer malfunction 200

1993, 240 wagon.

If the rear axle is lifted, the car placed on jackstands and the transmission placed in drive the speedometer will function correctly as the rear wheels freely rotate. speed increases as the pedal is depressed. all the while the odometer works properly.

remove the jackstands, place the car in drive and take it for a drive the speedometer does NOT register any speed at all YET the odometer is working properly.

any ideas?
